The two companies announced today that Torchlight 3 will be launching on October 13th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. Torchlight III is all about balancing stats, comparing gearsets, and offing goblins by the truckload, and frequent stops of exposition or cutscenes would only serve to get in the way of the main. Torchlight III had a long road to release. They even gave us a precise launch time for the game, announcing that it’ll go live at 7 AM PDT/11 AM EDT. It spent years in development as Torchlight Frontiers, a free-to-play ever-expanding multiplayer RPG. That compromise hasn’t really worked on the Switch for this particular game. Torchlight III sounds just as good as its bigger brothers, and has all of the same enjoyable content. Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch version of Torchlight 3 will follow this launch at some point in the future, but we don’t have a precise release date for that one yet. The Early Access version of Torchlight 3 is a decent action-RPG but doesn't yet live up to its predecessors by doing anything especially memorable.

In a Steam news post, Echtra Games said that everyone who purchased the early access version will automatically be upgraded to the full version for free (as you’d expect), and that all buyers will get a Fairy pet regardless of platform. As a gameplay comparison it felt I had more flexibility to create a build than say, in a game like Destiny 2.Whether or not Torchlight 3 will be in a state to turn those feelings around in just a couple of weeks remains to be seen, but Torchlight 3 definitely has a lot to live up to given how highly action RPG fans seem to regard the first two Torchlight games. At no point did I feel restricted or forced into a meta build and experimentation was always fun and often rewarding. The Skill trees are different this time around, but the two distinct character trees coupled with the new relic tree and various loot sets and attributes make for plentiful customization and character builds. That theme continues with Torchlight III, it's instantly familiar to anyone who has played the previous games, or indeed, any ARPG. While a competent and respected entry into the ARPG genre, Torchlight has never really taken itself too seriously, its always been about fun and accessibility. However that wasn't really my finding at all. A lot of the criticism levelled at the game is that it has become over-simplified in this latest iteration, "Torch lite" if you will. The tongue in cheek quests and setting mask a well balanced and mechanically sound ARPG framework working tirelessly in the background to provide a slick gaming experience. The new characters are all uniquely different and equally fun to play. The graphics are beautiful and vibrant with wonderful ability effects. Quite honestly I've really enjoyed my time with this game so far, its without a doubt a Torchlight game. ARPG's are one of my personal favourite genres, so does Torchlight 3 live up to the expectations benchmarked by its prequels? Or does it fall short? I've been playing quite a bit over the last week and have also played the previous Torchlight games on PC, Switch and Console many times.
